‘Tis the Season to Put Insulin in Bottoms

This holiday season, Callen’s Wolf Pack is teaming up with the Children’s Diabetes Foundation of Denver to provide under or uninsured families with diabetic supplies. The average cost of the supplies needed to manage diabetes is $700/month. This includes insulin, syringes, blood glucose test strips, blood ketone test strips, lancets and glucagon (for severe low blood glucose episodes). The cost is even higher for those on an insulin pump.

At the Barbara Davis Center in Denver, approximately 38% of the 6,000 children and young adults treated are under or uninsured. Because these supplies are an absolute necessity for diabetic children, it can present an enormous financial and emotional burden on their parents. The Helping Hands committee of the Children’s Diabetes Foundation ensures no child is without these required supplies.

So what do you get the person that has everything? Syringes, of course. Or insulin. We now have paper ornaments available in a “giving tree” fashion, where each ornament represents a diabetic supply:

$10 (Snowman) – Medical ID bracelet
$25 (Snowflake/Star) – Box of 25 syringes
$50 (Candy Cane) – Approximately 1 container (50) glucose test strips
$100 (Present Box) – Approximately 1 vial of insulin

Each design was created by young patients of the Barbara Davis Center. These are available at a few local schools, and in our living room. The Children’s Diabetes Foundation just posted this as an event to their Facebook page, and linked it to their donation center so you can purchase online as well!!!! Anyone with a Pay Pal account (or willing to create one) can participate.

Why My Kid is Smarter Than Everyone Else

Everyone has the moments in their life. The moments that you constantly refer back to that gave you clarity and direction. By now everyone has heard us tell this story. When Cal was 3, I woke him up and asked him to roll onto his belly so that I could give him insulin in his bottom. He refused to roll over, so I explained all the places he could have injections when he was big like daddy. He got very upset and said, “No, when I’m big like daddy I don’t have diabetes.” I left the room sobbing, and could barely explain what happened. But instead of chalking it up to a lack of capacity or understanding on Cal’s part, we just figured that he knew something we didn’t!

I use this moment all the time. I’m using it now.

The other night, I found a karate class for Cal and learned the teacher is diabetic. When I told Cal that the teacher had been diagnosed at 5, he said, “Does she still have diabetes?” When I explained that it is a disease you live with until a cure is found, he said, “When they find a cure, can I have gluten?”

Tickets Now Available for the Cocktail Bowling Fundraiser – July 23, 2011

We are excited to announce that Callen’s Wolf Pack will be hosting a Cocktail Bowling Fundraiser on Saturday, July 23rd. All proceeds will go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) to assist in technological advances, and ultimately a cure, for all of those living with Type 1 Diabetes.

We are asking all of our friends and family to create a six person team and get suited up to bowl for our favorite cause. The details are below. Please contact us directly to purchase your tickets and get your lane assigned today!!! Tickets are available first come, first serve through July 13th.

COCKTAIL BOWLING FUNDRAISER

Location: Lucky Strike in Belmar (Lakewood, CO)

Date/Time: Saturday, July 23rd from 4:30 – 6:30p.m.

Ticket Information: Cocktail Bowling tickets are $75/ea ($40 of which is tax deductible as a charitable donation). Tickets include food, open well bar, bowling and prizes. Prizes will be given to the team with the highest average score, and to the team with the best outfits (80s, Lebowsky,… anything goes!). Non-drink tickets are also available for $55/ea. Thanks to Lucky Strike, all tickets will come with with coupons for free bowling/shoes to be used in the future.
